Submit to One Another

My friend Mark was single for many years and during those years I could see that he was becoming increasingly selfish and self-centered. He liked things done his way and became intolerant of those who wouldn’t cater to him.

As you can imagine, this had a very negative effect on his dating life. Everything had to revolve around him, and the relationships didn’t last long. He was lonely and he began to wonder if he would ever get married.

Finally, one day at church, our pastor spoke on Ephesians 5, which talks about “submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Mark experienced a light-bulb moment. He realized that he had been treating people badly. The next time he went out with a woman, he would make every effort to serve her in a godly way.

Not long after God changed Mark’s heart, he met the woman who is now his wife. He learned the joy that comes of humbly serving others.
