Spiritual Freedom

Here in America, we enjoy the freedom to write letters to the editor, worship as we please, and protest injustice.  These are civil freedoms.

But we may still be in bondage in the most crucial aspect of life:  spiritual freedom.

Jesus once amazed His listeners when He told them, “Everyone who sins is a slave to sin.” Then He gave the Good News – “If the Son (that’s Jesus Himself) sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:34, 36)

Jesus wasn’t talking to drunks, prostitutes, and thieves when He said this.  He was speaking to educated, moral, and religious people.  They were shocked to hear themselves referred to as slaves to sin.

But that’s what we are until we receive the forgiveness that Jesus offers us. Only then can we attain true freedom.

“They were shocked to hear themselves referred to as slaves to sin. But that’s what we are until we receive the forgiveness that Jesus offers us.”

John 8:36

“So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.”
