What makes us good in God's eyes?
If you were to ask a random person what the purpose of going to church is, many would say, “to become a better person.”
There is a widely held perception that we can become “good people” on our own, and that being a good person is the ultimate goal in life. But the purpose of Christianity is not morality.
To become a better person is a natural fruit of life with Jesus, but it is not the purpose. The purpose of life with Jesus is… life with Jesus! He has made you alive. There is no life apart from Him.
There are plenty of people who are contributing members of society. They love their families. They are responsible employees. They give to charity. But without Jesus, even doing all of these good things, you remain spiritually dead. Apart from Jesus, you cannot be fully alive.
It is Jesus alone who gives life – eternal life. St. Paul writes in Galatians, “So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified. (Galatians 2:16).
Works of the law - our own sincere efforts to “be good” - can’t do it. But Jesus can. Trust Him by faith today, and share this truly Good News, with your world.
