A Light in the Darkness

At memorial services, there are often candles among the flowers and the photos. And in a place where tragedy has struck, sometimes a candlelight vigil will be held with mourners standing together in the darkness holding lights.

We light candles at such times because in the midst of darkness, even though small, flames can give hope, warmth and comfort. They give us the assurance that we're not alone. Others are standing with us even in the darkness. They can also light the way showing us how to move forward.

When Jesus was born, He fulfilled a prophecy in Isaiah that said, "The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine."

Jesus brought light to this dark world, and He has told us as His followers, we are also to be the light of the world. In a dark place, we can bring hope and comfort with the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

“In a dark place, we can bring hope and comfort with the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Matthew 5:15-16

“No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
