Are you living two lives?

Are you living two lives? I grew up in a loving, Christian family but for most of my young life I was serving only myself. My mother tells me that I was like a frog living in two ponds. I didn’t overtly hate God; I just didn’t care.

When it served my interests to appear to be the good, Christian boy—I lived that life.

When it served my interests to party and live for pleasure—I lived that life.

Jesus said, in Matthew 6:24:

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

I want to ask you a hard question— are you trying to serve two masters?

Do you want to follow Jesus—but you filter all of your decisions through what feels good to you?

Living two lives is exhausting. My master used to be me. I fed off of attention and acceptance from others. I felt empty and purposeless—like any moment I could lose it all.

In 1993—almost 30 years ago—I stopped living two lives. I surrendered to Jesus and the joy of living only for Him has changed me. I am no longer afraid of “losing it all,” because I’ve already given myself fully to Him.

You can do this too. You can pray right now and confess to God that You only want to serve one master—Jesus Christ. Ask God for His grace to help you to serve Him alone, and I assure you that He pours it out generously!
